Why Wanstead Park Is My Favourite Place to Take the Dogs

If you ask me to pick one spot out of everywhere I walk dogs across East London, it's Wanstead Park, every time. As a dog walker covering Hackney, Stoke Newington and Victoria Park, I've got plenty of green space on my doorstep but Wanstead Park is the one I keep coming back to, and it's become my genuine go-to. It's not far to get to from any of my usual pick-up areas, the facilities are great, and it gives the dogs a kind of safe, off-lead freedom that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the city. Here's why.

So Much Space, So Many Different Walks

Wanstead Park is about 140 acres, and that size is really what makes it special. It means I'm never stuck doing the same walk twice, and I can always pick a route to suit the dogs I've got with me that day, or the weather.

On a hot day, there are shady woodland paths that keep everyone cool. If the dogs want to properly stretch their legs, there are open fields for that. If they fancy a paddle, there's water access. It's woods, fields, and water all in one place, which means loads of physical and mental stimulation packed into a single walk.

And on a freezing cold winter walk, there's a proper tea hut on site — which, I'll be honest, matters almost as much to me as it does to the dogs.

What the Dogs Get Out of It

This is where Wanstead Park really earns its place as my favourite. I look after a lot of high-energy dogs, and what they need isn't just a big field to run in, it's a mix of mental stimulation and physical release. Wanstead gives them both. There's endless sniffing and exploring to be done in the woods and undergrowth, and then plenty of open space for a proper burn-up when they need to let off steam properly.

The River Roding: Water Access, Done Safely

The River Roding runs through the back of the park, and there are a couple of spots where it's shallow and wide, which is perfect for dogs who love the water. But this is somewhere I'm careful, not casual.

If it's been raining, I don't let the dogs in — the flow can get too strong and it's just not worth the risk. I also check the water quality online before letting anyone in. You can't just hope for the best when it comes to water and dogs; you have to plan for it properly, and that's exactly how I treat it at Wanstead.

Why the Freedom There Is Genuinely Rare

Every dog on a DogTrek walk wears a Tractive GPS tracker, and at Wanstead Park that really comes into its own. Because I always know exactly where the dogs are, I'm not worried about them wandering off into the trees, and for some dogs, that little bit of extra freedom to explore off-lead makes a real difference to how much they enjoy the walk.

What makes Wanstead especially good for this is that there are no roads dogs can suddenly run into. There's simply nowhere for them to run off to. That's genuinely reassuring, both for me as the walker and for owners trusting me with their dogs. They know their dog can have that bit more freedom without the worry that comes with a smaller, more exposed local park. There aren't many places like that left, and it's what singles Wanstead out as somewhere really special to take dogs, compared to a smaller local green space where there just isn't the room.

Even though Wanstead Park sits a little further out from my core patch, it doesn't take long to get to at all, and between the variety of terrain, the safe off-lead space, and genuinely great facilities, it's become my default choice for dogs I collect from Hackney, Stoke Newington and Victoria Park.
